Why AI Infrastructure
Must Be Public Goods

Societies have learned: critical infrastructure cannot be exclusively in private hands. That applies to roads, energy, communication — and it applies to AI.

Public infrastructure as metaphor for AI commons

The Diagnosis: AI Infrastructure is Being Privatized

AI infrastructure is being privatized right now — just as the internet was in the 1990s. Back then, society recognized: critical infrastructure is a public good.

Roads don't belong to a single company. The power grid is regulated. The public internet is built on open protocols. When it comes to infrastructure, society has repeatedly decided: Too important for monopoly.

"AI infrastructure is the critical infrastructure of the 21st century."
20th c. Power grid Regulated, not privatized
1990s Internet protocols TCP/IP, HTTP: open
2000s Wikipedia Knowledge as public good
2010s Open source Linux Foundation, Apache
Now AI Infrastructure OCC: public, controlled by no one
